Tampa Bay Buccaneers Set to Waive Defensive Tackle Desmond Watson Amid Weight Concerns

In a surprising turn of events, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are reportedly preparing to waive defensive tackle Desmond Watson, who has garnered attention as the heaviest player in the NFL. Multiple sources indicate that the official announcement will come before the roster cutdown deadline of 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

Watson, who joined the Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent after playing college football at the University of Florida, has faced significant challenges in his transition to the professional level. At his pro day in April, he weighed in at a staggering 464 pounds but managed to shed 25 to 30 pounds leading up to the draft. Unfortunately, his weight loss efforts fell short, resulting in missed practice time and placement on the non-football injury list during training camp.

“He’s still working. Job’s not finished,” Watson’s agent, EJ Gonzalez, told the Associated Press, emphasizing the defensive tackle’s commitment to improving his condition.

Standing at 6-foot-6, Watson has been working closely with a nutritionist this summer in hopes of reaching an ideal playing weight, although the team has not specified what that target weight might be. Watson himself has openly discussed his struggles with weight management, attributing some of his challenges to habits formed during his college years.

“Stopping while driving,” Watson explained when asked about his past eating habits. “My biggest thing is keep going, get to where I need to get. There are stores and a lot of temptations. That’s helped me immensely.”

As the Buccaneers prepare to move on from Watson, the decision underscores the ongoing challenges athletes face in balancing performance with personal health. The team will now look to finalize their roster ahead of the upcoming season, while Watson continues to pursue his professional football dreams.
