Tampa Launches GEAR UP Program to Address Workforce Shortage in Auto Mechanics

TAMPA, Fla. – In a proactive move to combat a growing workforce shortage, the City of Tampa has partnered with Hillsborough Community College to launch the GEAR UP program, aimed at cultivating the next generation of auto mechanics and technicians.

With a nationwide demand for hundreds of thousands of auto technicians, Tampa has faced its own challenges in recruiting skilled mechanics to service its fleet of nearly 3,900 vehicles, which include essential first responder units and public service vehicles. Mayor Jane Castor emphasized the critical role these mechanics play in maintaining city operations. “When some people have their vehicle out of service, it can be an inconvenience. For the City of Tampa, that means city services are not provided,” she stated.

The GEAR UP program is designed to create a direct pipeline for students into the automotive workforce, offering financial and career incentives. Participants will receive approximately 15 hours of hands-on training each week at the city’s fleet maintenance division, with the city covering the full cost of tuition and training—up to $13,000 per student annually.

Current student Maurice Kennedy shared his enthusiasm for the program, noting the scarcity of quality training opportunities in the diesel field. “When I first started the program, I didn’t have a job, and I needed a way to fund myself,” he explained. “This definitely helps me out. I’m still getting paid a little bit to help get myself to school and back.”

Hillsborough Community College President Dr. Ken Atwater highlighted the program’s broader implications, stating, “Workforce training is one of our most powerful gateways to family-sustaining wages and long-term career success.”

The GEAR UP program spans approximately a year and a half, with the ultimate goal of placing students in full-time positions upon completion. As Tampa continues to address its workforce challenges, initiatives like GEAR UP not only aim to fill critical gaps but also empower students to embark on successful careers in the automotive industry.
