New Florida Law Prohibits Obstructing License Plates: What Drivers Need to Know
New Florida Law Bans Obstructive License Plate Accessories
TAMPA, Fla. – A new law that took effect on October 1 is making waves across the Sunshine State, banning any items that block or alter a driver’s license plate. This includes frames, covers, and even clear shields, all aimed at ensuring that law enforcement can easily read license plates.
Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) Trooper Kenn Watson emphasized the importance of this law for public safety. “We want to make sure that an officer, trooper, or deputy can read that plate,” he stated. “If something happened to you, you would want us to be able to identify you quickly and efficiently.”
The law extends beyond just frames and covers; it prohibits any modifications that do not belong on a tag, including stickers representing favorite sports teams. Watson noted that some accessories have become larger in recent years, complicating quick identification by law enforcement.
Local drivers are just beginning to learn about the change. Diane Bunsfield from Indian Rocks Beach expressed her surprise, stating, “I’m just going across the East Coast and go on a small trip. But now I know that when I get there, I will take it off.”
Reactions to the new law are mixed. While some drivers, like Jim Hardesty of Fort Myers, believe that law enforcement should focus on more pressing issues, others see the merit in the regulation. “I think it’s great for them. If it makes it easier for them instead of trying to get closer up to someone’s car,” Bunsfield added.
For now, FHP is prioritizing public education, with most drivers expected to receive warnings as they adjust to the new regulations. However, violations could eventually lead to fines of up to $500 and even jail time if someone intentionally obscures a tag while committing a crime.
Trooper Watson urges all drivers to check their plates and remove any unauthorized items before warnings turn into citations. As the law takes effect, the focus remains on ensuring that every license plate is clear and identifiable, enhancing safety for all on Florida roads.
