Nationwide “No Kings” Demonstration Set for October 18: Thousands Unite Against Authoritarianism

Nationwide “No Kings” Demonstration Set for Saturday

October 16, 2023 — A massive wave of protests is set to sweep across the United States this Saturday, with over 2,500 locations participating in the “No Kings” demonstration. Among these, nearly 90 sites are located in Florida, with a dozen events planned throughout Southwest Florida, from Bradenton to Naples and Sanibel to Sebring.

The demonstrations are a direct response to what many activists describe as authoritarian actions by the Trump Administration. Organizers are rallying to make it clear that Americans reject the notion of “kings” or dictators in their democracy.

“Thousands of us are uniting to support events on October 18, where millions of us will join together to make clear to President Trump that we don’t do dictators or kings in America,” said Lisa Gilbert, co-president of Public Citizen, a non-profit consumer advocacy organization with over 1 million members. Gilbert spoke during a virtual national organizing meeting on Tuesday, emphasizing the importance of solidarity and peaceful protest.

Eunic Epstein-Ortiz, the national spokeswoman for the “No Kings” movement, highlighted the urgency of the protests. “We know the reason why we’re showing up on October 18 is because of everything they continue to do, from abducting our neighbors off the streets to slashing Medicaid and Medicare, and attacking trans people,” she stated. “We want to ensure that we tell the stories of everyone who has suffered direct harm from this administration.”

The “No Kings” events are designed to be peaceful and joyful, with organizers urging participants to express their dissent without violence. “We believe that our country doesn’t have kings, and we’re going to make some noise about it,” Epstein-Ortiz added.

This Saturday’s demonstration marks the third “No Kings” protest this year, following successful events in March and June that drew millions of participants nationwide. The June protest alone claimed over 5 million attendees.

For those interested in joining the movement, detailed information about individual protests can be found on the No Kings website.

As the nation gears up for this significant day of action, the message remains clear: Americans are standing together to defend their democratic values and reject authoritarianism.
