Major Breakthrough in 50-Year-Old Cold Case: Mystery Woman Identified as Nancy Gale Erickson

New Hampshire Cold Case Breakthrough: Mystery Woman Identified After 50 Years

MARLBOROUGH, NH — In a significant development for a case that has haunted investigators for half a century, New Hampshire authorities have identified a woman whose remains were discovered in 1974. The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office announced on Wednesday that the mystery woman is Nancy Gale Erickson, who was just 21 years old at the time of her death.

Erickson’s body was found on April 16, 1974, in a wooded area off Route 124 in Marlborough, a small town near Keene. Forensic analysis indicated she had died the previous fall, but her identity remained a mystery until now. The breakthrough came through advanced forensic testing, aided by the New Hampshire State Police Forensic Laboratory, NamUs, Bode Technology, and the University of North Texas Health Science Center.

Detective Sgt. Kelly LaPointe of the New Hampshire State Police expressed the emotional weight of the discovery. “Putting a name to Nancy Gale Erickson is incredibly meaningful. It’s more than solving a mystery — it’s restoring her identity and honoring the life she lived. She was never forgotten,” LaPointe stated. “Now the focus turns to understanding how and why she died.”

Erickson was born in Bay Shore, New York, in 1951 and grew up in Elmira. She earned a nursing degree from Corning Community College and moved to Tampa, Florida, in 1972 to work at Tampa General Hospital. However, her life took a sudden turn in 1973 when she left Tampa with little more than a duffel bag, leaving her family concerned.

Her last known arrest occurred in October 1973 in Bellows Falls, Vermont, for stealing a car. Following her release, she worked at the Brattleboro Retreat and lived at the Community House until she abruptly vanished on October 30, 1973. Her family reported her missing in 2021, marking the first time she was officially listed as such.

The investigation into her death remains ongoing, with authorities seeking information from the public. They are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who may have known Erickson or had contact with her during her time in Vermont or Florida.

Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to reach out to the New Hampshire Cold Case Unit Tip Line at 800-525-5555, email coldcaseunit@dos.nh.gov, or submit a tip online at www.doj.nh.gov/criminal/cold-case.

As the investigation continues, the hope is that this identification will not only bring closure to Erickson’s family but also shed light on the circumstances surrounding her untimely death.
