Mike Evans to Sit Out Preseason Debut Against Steelers

TAMPA, FL — In a surprising turn of events, Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ star wide receiver Mike Evans will not don his uniform for the team’s preseason matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers this Saturday night. Initially, head coach Todd Bowles had planned for his starters to see action in the exhibition game, but Evans’ impressive performance during joint practices has led to a change of plans.

Buccaneers fans can breathe a sigh of relief; Evans’ absence is not due to any lingering hamstring issues. Instead, the veteran receiver has showcased his skills so effectively in practice that the coaching staff believes there’s little need for him to take the field this weekend. According to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, Evans earned the day off as a reward for his standout performance.

Entering his 12th season in the NFL, Evans has been a force to be reckoned with during practices, notably outperforming standout defensive back Jalen Ramsey. Reports indicate that Evans had one of his best outings in camp, consistently beating Ramsey, a matchup that fans have eagerly anticipated since their last encounter in November 2022.

While Evans will sit out, he won’t be alone. Quarterback Baker Mayfield and linebacker Lavonte David will also take the night off against the Steelers, allowing younger players to step into the spotlight.

As the Buccaneers gear up for the 2025 season, Evans is poised to make history. He currently holds the franchise records for receptions (836), receiving yards (12,684), and receiving touchdowns (105). Additionally, he holds the NFL record for the most consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons to start a career, with 11. Evans is aiming for at least three more such seasons to tie Jerry Rice’s all-time record of 14.

Last season was fraught with challenges for Evans, who battled injuries but managed to keep his streak alive with a crucial catch in the final game against the New Orleans Saints. As the Buccaneers prepare for their preseason slate against the Steelers, fans can look forward to seeing Evans back in action when it counts.

The game kicks off at 7:00 p.m. ET from Acrisure Stadium. Stay tuned for more updates on the Buccaneers as they navigate the 2025 season.
