Pastor of Tampa Megachurch Arrested for Violating Social Distancing Orders amid COVID-19

Pastor of Tampa Megachurch Arrested for Violating Social Distancing Orders

The pastor of a Tampa megachurch is facing charges after refusing to close its doors despite a “safer at home” order in effect in Hillsborough County to stop the spread of COVID-19. Pastor Rodney Howard-Browne of The River at Tampa Bay Church held two services on Sunday with up to 500 people in attendance, in defiance of social distancing guidelines.

Sheriff Chad Chronister announced an arrest warrant for Howard-Browne on charges of unlawful assembly and violating public health emergency rules. The pastor turned himself in and was released on bond shortly after. The sheriff expressed concern about the potential spread of the virus following the crowded services.

While some religious leaders defended the pastor’s actions, others, including Pastor Ken Whitten and Reverend Thomas Scott, emphasized the importance of following social distancing guidelines to protect parishioners and the community. State Attorney Andrew Warren urged church members to prioritize the health and safety of their neighbors.

Howard-Browne’s attorney argued that the church had taken precautions, such as providing hand sanitizer and marking 6-foot separations, to ensure the safety of attendees. However, critics, including the sheriff and state attorney, maintained that the pastor’s actions put lives at risk.

The incident has sparked a debate about religious freedom versus public health concerns during the pandemic. While some believe that churches should be allowed to operate with precautions in place, others argue that gatherings pose a significant risk of spreading the virus.

As the situation unfolds, the community is reminded of the importance of following guidelines to prevent the further spread of COVID-19. The pastor’s arrest serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced in balancing religious freedom with public health during these unprecedented times.
