Tampa City Council Member Luis Viera Files to Run for State House in 2026

Tampa City Councilman Luis Viera Announces Run for State House in 2026

Tampa City Councilman Luis Viera has officially filed to run for the State House in 2026. Viera, a Democrat, is vying to represent District 67, where House Democratic leader Fentrice Driskell is terming out.

Viera made the announcement after hinting at his intentions during a radio interview on WMNF’s public affairs program, The Skinny. During the interview, Viera expressed his support for Medicaid waivers for individuals with intellectual disabilities and emphasized the importance of investing in public schools, protecting civil rights, and supporting workers.

As Governor Ron DeSantis pushes for the end of property taxes, Viera has taken a different stance, advocating for more accommodations for seniors and a “mend it, don’t end it” approach to tax policy.

Viera’s decision to run for the State House will leave a vacancy in the Tampa City Council, which will need to be filled via a majority council vote. Another Democrat, Will Atkins, has also filed to run for the seat, adding to the competition for the position.

Due to Florida’s “Resign-To-Run” law, Viera will have to submit a resignation from the Tampa City Council at least 10 days prior to the first day of qualifying for the District 67 race. The resignation will be effective on the day the winner of the race takes office, regardless of whether Viera wins or loses.

The last time the Tampa City Council had to appoint a new member was in 2022, and the process was met with significant interest from candidates. Ultimately, Lynn Hurtak was appointed to the seat and went on to win election the following year.

Viera’s decision to run for the State House marks a significant step in his political career, and his campaign is expected to focus on issues of healthcare, education, and worker rights. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
