Discovering Tampa’s Black History at Ersula’s History Shop
Ersula’s History Shop: A Treasure Trove of Tampa’s Black Heritage
TAMPA, Fla. — Nestled in the heart of Tampa, Ersula’s History Shop is more than just a store; it’s a vibrant celebration of Black history, curated by the passionate Ersula Odom. Since opening its doors in 2022, the shop has become a beacon for those eager to explore the rich tapestry of African American narratives that have shaped the city.
“I am proud when you walk in that door and you go, ‘Wow!’” Odom beams, her enthusiasm palpable as she shares her vision. A lifelong history enthusiast, Odom has transformed her childhood hobby of collecting memorabilia into a mission to preserve and share the stories that often go untold.
The shop is a treasure chest, brimming with books, trinkets, artifacts, letters, and photographs, each piece telling a story of its own. “I can save someone’s history from going in the garbage and give it another life by letting someone else have it,” Odom explains, emphasizing her commitment to honoring the past.
With a focus on Tampa’s Black history, the shop covers a wide array of topics, from politics and music to military contributions. “I have everything from politics, music, military,” Odom notes, showcasing the diverse narratives that enrich the community’s heritage. Her own literary contributions, including the book African Americans of Tampa, further amplify these voices.
Odom’s passion is rooted in a deep understanding of interconnectedness. “I look for the connections because we are all interconnected,” she says, reflecting on her lifelong journey of discovery. Her goal is to inspire visitors to engage with history, sparking “aha moments” that encourage dialogue across generations.
“Our stories are at risk of not being told or not being told correctly,” Odom warns, underscoring the importance of her work. She invites everyone to step into her shop, not just to browse, but to connect with the past in a meaningful way. “I want them to come in and have an ‘aha moment’ where they discover something, remember something, or have something to talk about with another generation,” she adds.
Ersula’s History Shop is located at 1421 Tampa Park Plaza and welcomes visitors from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. In a world where history often fades into obscurity, Odom’s shop stands as a vibrant reminder that every story matters, and every voice deserves to be heard.
