Discover Local Freshness: Meacham Urban Farm in Downtown Tampa Offers Quality Produce Without Tariffs
Local Urban Farm Thrives Amid Rising Produce Imports
TAMPA, Fla. — In a world where fresh produce often travels thousands of miles before reaching your plate, Meacham Urban Farm is emerging as a beacon of local sustainability. Nestled in Downtown Tampa near the bustling I-4 and I-275 interchange, this hidden gem is quickly becoming a favorite among residents seeking quality fruits and vegetables without the burden of tariffs and international shipping costs.
Owner Joe Dalessio, who has been at the helm of Meacham Urban Farm for four years, reported a staggering 116% increase in business over the past six months. “We’ve seen a surge in interest as more people look for local options,” Dalessio told ABC Action News reporter Michael Paluska during a recent visit to the farm.
Meacham Urban Farm not only grows a variety of vegetables but also collaborates with around 20 local farms to provide a diverse selection of produce. “If you buy local fresh from Florida, you can get things in season, and people can come here and save a little bit of money,” Dalessio explained.
The farm’s commitment to supporting local food systems is evident in its operations. “There’s less fluctuation, less variability on global politics and economics,” Dalessio noted. “We harvest our produce two to three days a week, pulling in about 50,000 to 60,000 pounds a year for our farm store.”
In an effort to make healthy eating accessible to all, Meacham Urban Farm also accepts EBT, offering half-off purchases for eligible customers. “We’re trying to make it as affordable and approachable as possible for everyone,” Dalessio said.
The need for local produce has never been more pressing. According to the USDA, the percentage of fruits and vegetables imported into the U.S. has skyrocketed over the decades. In 1981, less than 10% of fresh vegetables were imported; today, that figure has risen to 35% for vegetables and 59% for fruits. “There’s no tariff, there’s no fuel cost,” Dalessio emphasized, highlighting the stability that local farming provides.
For those looking to support local agriculture, the Fresh from Florida website offers a comprehensive list of farms in the area. Notable mentions include Fat Beet Farm, Sweetwater Organic Community Farm, and Raprager Family Farms, among others.
As the demand for local produce continues to rise, Meacham Urban Farm stands as a testament to the power of community-supported agriculture. With its commitment to sustainability, affordability, and quality, this urban oasis is not just a farm; it’s a movement towards a healthier, more resilient food system.
