Hillsborough County, Fla. — Starting July 1, a new law in Florida will reshape the way teenagers prepare for their driving journeys. The legislation mandates that students complete a classroom course before obtaining their learner’s permit, a shift from the previous requirement that only included a traffic law and substance abuse course.
Local driving instructors are welcoming the change, believing it will bolster road safety for new drivers. Billy York, an experienced instructor at Auto Safety Driving School in Tampa, expressed his support for the new law. “Anything you can do to further enhance driving safety, especially with new students, I think is a plus,” he stated. With years of experience teaching teens, York emphasized that thorough preparation is crucial for safe driving.
Michele Brown, a recent graduate of the driving school who received her license last month, echoed York’s sentiments. Reflecting on her experiences on the road, she noted the prevalence of speeding and heavy traffic. “Ithink it’s better to be cautious on the road. So, having more classes, more lessons, studying more, that’s always good,” Brown told ABC Action News.
As the law approaches its implementation date, driving schools like Auto Safety Driving School are actively collaborating with state officials to adapt their curricula. “We’re still working with the state on that. That’s still kind of a fluid process,” York explained. “We’re ready. We’re standing by. We’re ready to assist.”
The new requirement aims to equip young drivers with essential knowledge and skills, fostering a safer driving environment for everyone on the road.
