Lakeland Optician Arrested for Brandishing Gun in Road Rage Incident Involving Child
Road Rage Incident in Lakeland Leads to Arrest of Optician
LAKELAND, Fla. – A shocking road rage incident unfolded in Lakeland on Sunday, as an optician allegedly brandished a firearm at another vehicle containing a 3-year-old child. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) reported that Stephen Phillips, driving a Hyundai Santa Fe, confronted the victims on Harden Boulevard, escalating a minor traffic dispute into a dangerous situation.
According to eyewitness accounts, the victims were traveling southbound when Phillips began driving erratically, even performing a “brake check” on their vehicle. The confrontation reached a boiling point when both vehicles stopped side by side at a traffic light. In a startling turn of events, Phillips pulled out a silver semi-automatic firearm, reportedly pointing it directly at the victims with his finger on the trigger.
The victims, understandably shaken, reported that Phillips made repeated racial slurs during the encounter, heightening their fear for their safety. Initially, Phillips denied brandishing the weapon, but later admitted to pulling it out, claiming he did not aim it at the victims. However, the victims provided detectives with a photo of the incident, clearly showing Phillips holding a .22 caliber Phoenix Arms HP firearm.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd condemned the actions, stating, “Brandishing a firearm at innocent people—especially a child—is unacceptable. Road rage that escalates into violence will not be tolerated, and my detectives acted quickly to put this man behind bars.” He added, “You can see this clearly with or without glasses. This optician should have known this was going to be crystal clear to us.”
Phillips was arrested and now faces serious charges, including three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and improper exhibition of a firearm. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of road rage and the importance of maintaining composure behind the wheel.
As the investigation continues, the community is left to grapple with the implications of such reckless behavior, especially when it endangers the lives of innocent children.
