Juneteenth Celebrations Around Tampa Bay

Juneteenth, the annual celebration of the end of slavery in the United States, has now become a federal holiday thanks to President Joe Biden signing the legislation on June 17, 2021. This historic day commemorates the arrival of Union soldiers in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865, with news that the enslaved were now free, two-and-a-half years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.

In Tampa Bay, there are various festivities planned to celebrate Juneteenth and recognize the achievements of the African American community. Here’s a look at some of the events happening around the area:

In Hernando County, the Third Annual Juneteenth Hair & Fashion Gala will take place on June 15 at the WellCome OM Integral Healing & Education Center. This event offers a platform for small businesses to showcase their products and services.

In Hillsborough County, there are several events scheduled, including the Fourth Annual Juneteenth Festival at Raymond James Stadium, the Juneteenth Cultural Celebration at the Tampa Museum of Art, and the Juneteenth Celebration 2024 at the USF Sam & Martha Gibbons Alumni Center.

Manatee County will host the Manatee Juneteenth Community Celebration from June 19-22 at the 13TH Avenue Dream Center, featuring guest speakers and local authors.

Pasco County will have the 4th Annual East Pasco Juneteenth Community Celebration on June 22 at the Lewis Abraham Boys & Girls Club of Lacoochee, with vendors, guest speakers, performances, live music, food, and health screening offers.

Pinellas County has a variety of events planned, including the Juneteenth Literacy Festival, the 4-Day Clearwater Juneteenth Celebration, the Shades of Pride Festival, Freedom Fest at Tropicana Field Lot 1, and the Juneteenth Day Celebration at the Pinellas County African American History Museum.

In Polk County, the Juneteenth Freedom Celebration at Jackson Park, the 2024 Juneteenth Celebration at Lake Maude Recreation Park, the Juneteenth Celebration of Freedom Polk City at the Donald Brunson Community Center, and the Juneteenth Freedom Festival at Simpson Park Community Center are all set to take place.

These events offer a chance for the community to come together, celebrate, and reflect on the significance of Juneteenth in American history. Join in on the festivities and honor this important day in our nation’s past.
