Tampa Bay Celebrates Juneteenth: A Commemoration of Freedom and Community

TAMPA, Fla. — As the sun sets on June 19, the Tampa Bay area gears up to honor Juneteenth, a day that marks the end of slavery in the United States. Celebrated annually, this significant date became a federal holiday after President Joe Biden signed the legislation on June 17, 2021. The day commemorates the arrival of Union soldiers in Galveston, Texas, in 1865, who brought the news of freedom to enslaved individuals—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

This year, Tampa Bay is set to host a vibrant array of events that reflect the achievements and contributions of the African American community. From cultural celebrations to educational discussions, here’s a look at the festivities planned across the region.
