Could Tampa See Snow This Weekend? Here’s What You Need to Know!
Bitter Cold Could Bring Snowflakes to Tampa This Weekend
TAMPA, Fla. — The Sunshine State is bracing for an unexpected chill this weekend, with temperatures plummeting and blustery winds raising the possibility of snowflakes in Tampa. While the idea of a winter wonderland may be enticing, residents should temper their expectations.
Meteorologists are forecasting a slight chance of flurries as a powerful coastal storm strengthens along the Carolinas, pushing arctic air into Florida. The cold front is expected to sweep through on Saturday, causing temperatures to drop throughout the afternoon. Winds from the northwest will pick up, reaching speeds of 15–25 mph, with even higher gusts near the coast.
While the forecast indicates a 10–20% chance of snowflakes, particularly from Citrus County south through Pinellas and Hillsborough counties, any precipitation that does fall is likely to be brief and light, with little to no accumulation.
As cold air moves over the warmer Gulf waters, it may generate narrow bands of “Gulf-effect” clouds and light showers offshore. If these clouds drift onshore late Saturday night, temperatures in the mid to upper 30s could allow for a mix of light rain and snowflakes. However, experts caution that drizzle can sometimes be mistaken for snow, making true frozen precipitation unlikely.
A Look Back: When Did It Last Snow in Tampa?
While northern Florida has seen its fair share of snow this winter, Tampa has not been so fortunate. The last time snow accumulated in the city was a remarkable 49 years ago, on January 19, 1977, when .20 inches fell in Tampa and up to 2 inches were reported in nearby Plant City, according to the National Weather Service.
For those curious about flurries, the most recent occurrence was on January 9, 2010, when sleet and a few snowflakes were reported, but did not stick. Before that, the Tampa Bay area hadn’t seen flurries since December 23, 1989.
As the weekend approaches, residents are encouraged to bundle up and keep an eye on the forecast. While a snow day in Tampa may be a long shot, the chill in the air is sure to spark excitement and curiosity among locals. Stay warm, Tampa!
