Rally for a Free Iran: Advocating for Change in Downtown Tampa
Rally for a Free Iran Set to Take Place in Downtown Tampa
TAMPA, Fla. — A rally advocating for a “Free Iran” is scheduled for this Sunday, January 18, at 2 p.m. in downtown Tampa, drawing attention to the ongoing protests and reported mass killings in Iran. The event, organized by Damineh Oveisi, aims to raise awareness and garner international support against the authoritarian regime in her homeland.
Oveisi, who owns ARCpoint Labs of Clearwater, has been deeply affected by the turmoil in Iran, particularly concerning her family. “I couldn’t talk to them,” she shared, reflecting on the anxiety of not knowing their fate amidst the unrest. After authorities cut off internet access during widespread protests, Oveisi endured six agonizing days of uncertainty before finally receiving a call confirming her family’s safety. “I was just crying,” she recalled, overwhelmed with relief upon hearing her sister’s voice.
Despite this moment of joy, Oveisi remains fearful for her family’s safety and believes that international intervention is crucial for change. “President Trump actually gave the Iranian people hope,” she noted, recalling his encouragement for the populace to continue their fight for freedom.
Experts weigh in on the complexities of U.S. involvement in Iran. Abby Hall, an economics professor at the University of Tampa, cautioned against hasty interventions, citing the historical challenges of regime change and the geopolitical implications involving nations like China and Russia. “The potential pitfalls of intervening in Iran are many,” Hall stated.
Arman Mamoudien, a research fellow at the USF Global and National Security Institute and a fellow Iranian, echoed the need for a careful approach. “Instead of sending aircraft, send Starlinks and satellites,” he suggested, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness about the situation in Iran without escalating military tensions.
Oveisi hopes that the rally will mobilize more supporters to amplify the voices of those suffering under the Iranian regime. “We are trying to be their voice and ask the world not to stay silent,” she asserted.
The rally will take place at 600 North Ashley Drive, and Oveisi encourages all who stand for freedom and human rights to join in solidarity.
As the world watches, the call for a “Free Iran” resonates not just in Tampa but across the globe, highlighting the urgent need for action and support for those fighting for their rights.
