Hillsborough County Deputy Involved in Fatal Shooting of Woman During Domestic Incident
Tragic Incident in Tampa: Deputy Shoots Woman After Domestic Violence Call
TAMPA, Fla. — A Hillsborough County deputy shot and killed a woman early Sunday morning after she allegedly raised a gun at law enforcement officers responding to a domestic violence incident. The shooting occurred around 4:41 a.m. at a residence on Carlton Circle, following a call about a burglary.
According to Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Joseph Maurer, deputies arrived on the scene to find that 46-year-old Rosamond Brookins had shot her daughter. As deputies began their investigation, a roommate emerged from the home with a child, providing crucial information about the situation inside.
Upon entering the residence, deputies discovered Brookins’ daughter with a gunshot wound to her hand. She was later reported to be in stable condition. Brookins, however, had barricaded herself in a locked back room. When deputies breached the door, they found her armed with a handgun.
Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, Brookins raised the firearm instead. “Our deputy fires and neutralizes the threat,” Maurer stated, confirming that Brookins died at the scene.
Deputy Joshua Thomas, who has been with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office for 10 months and has six years of prior service with the Temple Terrace Police Department, was involved in the shooting. He has no prior use of force incidents on record and has been placed on administrative leave with pay while the investigation is ongoing.
“This is a tragic situation that no family should ever have to endure,” said Hillsborough Sheriff Chad Chronister. “Our deputies acted swiftly to protect the lives of a woman and child in immediate danger. Domestic violence can escalate in an instant—if you or someone you know is in crisis, please reach out for help. You are not alone, and there is support available.”
The investigation into the incident is being handled by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, with further updates expected as the situation develops.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragic event, the impact of domestic violence remains a pressing concern. Authorities urge anyone facing similar situations to seek help and support.
