Heather Leigh: From Intern to Emmy-Winning News Anchor

Heather Leigh’s journey in the world of news began in 2009 with two internships at a station in Tampa, Florida, followed by another internship in Jacksonville. It was during this time that she developed her passion for reporting and gained a deep understanding of how a newsroom operates.

After graduating from the University of South Florida in 2012, Heather landed her first job in Sioux City, Iowa, at Siouxland News. Over the course of two years, she reported and anchored the morning news, often filling in on the evening news desk. However, Heather longed to return to her sunny roots in Florida and eventually secured a position at Channel 4 in Jacksonville, where she had previously interned.

In Jacksonville, Heather’s reporting skills flourished, making her a go-to reporter for breaking news and major stories. She received accolades for her work, including her first Emmy for a story on police shootings and an AP award for best Multimedia Journalist in a medium-sized market.

After three successful years in Jacksonville, Heather set her sights on Tampa, where she grew up and where her family still resides. Joining WFTS – ABC Action News in 2017, Heather quickly rose through the ranks, earning two Emmy awards for her coverage of the state’s unemployment system failures during the COVID-19 pandemic. She also received multiple AP awards for her work as a Multi-media journalist in a large market.

In 2022, Heather transitioned to the role of weekend morning anchor for Good Morning Tampa Bay, reporting three mornings a week and filling in as a traffic anchor when needed. Despite her busy schedule, Heather remains an avid animal lover, with two dogs and two cats that she loves to talk about.

Heather Leigh’s journey from intern to Emmy-winning news anchor is a testament to her dedication and talent in the field of journalism. Her passion for reporting and commitment to excellence continue to drive her success in the industry.
