Raising Awareness and Taking Action on World AIDS Day in St. Petersburg

World AIDS Day is approaching on Friday, Nov. 29, and local medical officials in St. Petersburg, Florida, are working hard to raise awareness about the ongoing AIDS epidemic. Despite advancements in treatment, the HIV virus is still a prevalent issue, especially among Black women in Pinellas County.

Dr. Bob Wallace, who runs Love the Golden Rule Clinic, has been on the front lines of HIV treatment since the 1980s. He recalls the devastating impact of the virus during those early years, with many patients facing a grim prognosis. However, thanks to medical advancements, HIV is no longer a death sentence.

Unfortunately, the HIV rate among Black women in Pinellas County has doubled in recent years, prompting concern among local health officials. Nurse Robin Taylor, who works in underserved communities, is actively working to combat this trend by providing HIV testing and education in these neighborhoods.

On World AIDS Day, Love The Golden Rule Clinic will host a free community event to offer HIV testing, Hepatitis C testing, and free flu vaccines. Dr. Wallace emphasizes the importance of getting tested and spreading awareness about HIV prevention.

As the fight against HIV continues, it’s crucial for communities to come together to support those affected by the virus and work towards ending the stigma surrounding HIV. World AIDS Day serves as a reminder of the progress made in HIV treatment and the ongoing efforts needed to combat this global health crisis.
