Oklahoma Governor Signs Executive Order Protecting Religious Freedom

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt has signed an executive order aimed at protecting religious freedom in the state, amidst ongoing controversy surrounding a proposed Catholic charter school. The order, announced on Monday, directs state officials to review laws and policies to ensure they comply with religious freedom protections.

The executive order comes in response to a lawsuit filed by state Attorney General Gentner Drummond against the proposed St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School, which was approved by the state charter school board. Drummond argues that the school’s existence would constitute state support of a religion.

The ongoing litigation has now reached the U.S. Supreme Court, where a landmark decision could potentially reshape school choice and religious freedom in the country. Governor Stitt’s order has drawn criticism from Drummond, who expressed concerns about taxpayer funding for other religious institutions.

Stitt, however, defended the order, stating that religious freedom is a God-given right that the government must protect. The executive order also prohibits state officials from restricting access to public programs based on religious affiliation.

The controversy surrounding the proposed Catholic charter school highlights the ongoing debate over the intersection of religion and public education. With the U.S. Supreme Court now involved, the outcome of this case could have far-reaching implications for religious freedom and school choice in the United States.
