Steinhatchee, Fla. — In a significant move aimed at bolstering rural communities, Governor Ron DeSantis announced a comprehensive infrastructure investment plan on Wednesday morning, unveiling over $167.5 million in funding during a press conference at Sea Hag Marina.
Joined by Florida Commerce Secretary Alex Kelly, DeSantis emphasized the initiative’s focus on disaster recovery, storm resiliency, and essential upgrades to water and wastewater systems. The plan also includes funding for emergency shelters and road repairs, addressing critical needs in Florida’s rural areas.
Major Investments
The funding breakdown highlights a commitment to enhancing community infrastructure:
- $36 million allocated to Taylor County through Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery and Florida’s Rural Infrastructure Fund.
- $12 million for a new parallel wastewater treatment facility.
- $8.5 million to modernize aging wastewater infrastructure.
- $4.5 million to establish a resilient water source.
- $1.5 million for residential road improvements in Steinhatchee.
- $4.9 million for a special needs emergency shelter in Taylor County.
- $298,440 to identify a site for new seafood processing and distribution facilities in Steinhatchee.
- $4.4 million to Doctor’s Memorial Hospital for emergency power systems and water treatment upgrades.
Water and Sewer Upgrades
The plan also addresses critical water and sewer infrastructure across the state:
- $4.5 million for water main repairs in Steinhatchee.
- $11.4 million awarded to Cedar Key for hardening potable water and wastewater systems.
- $25 million to Port St. Joe for rebuilding its wastewater treatment facility.
- $32 million for a new wastewater treatment plant in Cross City.
Emergency Preparedness and Community Projects
In addition to infrastructure upgrades, the plan includes funding for emergency preparedness:
- $1.2 million for drainage improvements in Gilchrist County.
- $8 million to reconstruct a special needs shelter in Madison County.
DeSantis also announced an allocation of $8.5 million to support ten small and rural communities through Florida’s Rural Infrastructure Fund, ensuring that even the smallest towns receive critical support.
Immigration Enforcement
In a related announcement, DeSantis revealed expanded immigration enforcement operations at the “Deportation Depot” in Baker County, signaling a continued focus on immigration issues alongside infrastructure development.
