Community Calls for Transparency Following the Tragic Death of DJ ShyGuy in Tampa Shooting
Community Mourns DJ ShyGuy After Fatal Shooting in Ybor City
TAMPA, Florida — The vibrant nightlife of Ybor City was shaken last Friday night when Dedrick Sykes, affectionately known as DJ ShyGuy, was shot and killed following a verbal dispute. As the investigation unfolds, friends and family are calling for transparency and justice in the wake of this tragic loss.
Sykes, a beloved figure in the local music scene, was shot near East 5th Avenue and North 22nd Street. Witnesses reported that a heated argument erupted between Sykes and another man, prompting police to respond shortly after the incident. The shooter, whose identity has not been disclosed, claims self-defense, and authorities have stated that he showed no signs of impairment during the investigation.
In the days following the shooting, a group of over a dozen supporters gathered outside the Tampa Police Headquarters, demanding the release of the shooter’s name. “Everybody loves him. His nickname is ‘Shy Guy’ for a reason, so it’s not adding up,” said Ashley Gooden, a close friend of Sykes. She described him as mild-mannered and kind, noting that he had been the DJ for her family for more than eight years without ever raising his voice.
Reginald Brown, another friend, echoed her sentiments, stating, “He’s never raised his voice. I barely know what he sounds like half the time. DJ ShyGuy is literally who he is.”
Among the demonstrators was Elvis Piggott, a pastor and former candidate for Tampa City Council’s District 5 seat, who expressed frustration over the lack of information. “When you keep hiding things and refuse to disclose anything, it makes you wonder what is the purpose of you hiding?” Piggott said, emphasizing the community’s need for clarity.
LaMaria Smith, who tragically lost her daughter Savannah to gun violence in 2021, also spoke at the gathering. “ShyGuy is no longer here. We’re his voice,” she declared, highlighting the ongoing struggle against gun violence in the community.
The restaurant and bar 7th and Grove, where Sykes had been the DJ for six years, paid tribute to him on Facebook, honoring his contributions to the local scene.
Tampa police have assured the community that they are working closely with Sykes’ family to piece together the events leading up to the shooting. “Out of respect for the family as they grieve, and for all those affected, we ask that information be shared responsibly,” the police stated.
As the investigation continues, authorities are collaborating with the State Attorney’s Office to determine the next steps. They encourage anyone with information related to the case to contact the non-emergency line at (813) 231-6130 or submit an anonymous tip through Tip411.
The community mourns the loss of DJ ShyGuy, a man whose music brought joy to many, and they remain united in their quest for justice.
