TAMPA, FL — A devastating car crash in the historic Ybor City neighborhood early Saturday morning has left four people dead and eleven others injured. The incident unfolded around 1 a.m. on the 1500 block of East 7th Avenue, a bustling area known for its nightlife.

Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw described the event as a “senseless tragedy,” emphasizing the reckless nature of the driving that led to this catastrophic loss of life. The driver, identified as 22-year-old Silas Sampson, was reportedly fleeing police after being observed street racing prior to the collision.

Sequence of Events

According to authorities, the sequence began when police spotted a vehicle driving erratically on I-275. Sampson exited the highway at high speed, prompting the Florida Highway Patrol to attempt a traffic stop. An unsuccessful PIT maneuver was executed in an effort to halt the vehicle, but Sampson continued eastbound on 7th Avenue at dangerous speeds. He ultimately lost control and crashed into a crowd of people gathered outside a bar.

Three victims died instantly at the scene, while a fourth succumbed to injuries later at the hospital. Among the injured, one person remains in critical condition, while eight others are reported to be stable.

Who Is Silas Sampson?

Sampson, a Black male from Tampa, was detained at the scene and is expected to face vehicular manslaughter charges, with additional felony charges likely as the investigation unfolds. Reports indicate that he was seen participating in street racing on Hillsborough Avenue before the fatal crash.
