Florida Cornerback Dijon Johnson Faces Felony Charges Following Traffic Stop in Tampa
TAMPA, Fla. — In a troubling turn of events, Florida Gators cornerback Dijon Johnson has been charged with two felonies, including possession of a firearm, following his arrest during a traffic stop in Tampa over the weekend.
The incident unfolded on Friday when police pulled over Johnson’s gray Dodge Challenger for allegedly running a stop signal. Officers reported detecting a “strong odor of burned marijuana” emanating from the vehicle. According to the criminal report filed in Hillsborough County, Johnson was uncooperative during the stop, refusing to exit the car.
After officers removed him from the vehicle, a search revealed marijuana and 8 grams of synthetic marijuana stashed in a backpack. Additionally, a loaded black Glock 19 with 17 rounds was found inside the car.
Tim Taylor, Johnson’s attorney, issued a statement on Wednesday, emphasizing that they are currently in discussions with the State Attorney’s Office regarding the case. “At this time, no formal charges have been filed. Any potential charging decision will, of course, need to be consistent with Florida law. We are eager for all the pertinent facts to come to light,” Taylor said.
The charges against Johnson include a second-degree felony for the gun possession and a third-degree felony for the synthetic marijuana. He also faces misdemeanor charges for marijuana possession and resisting arrest without violence. Court documents indicate that Johnson has entered written pleas of not guilty to all charges.
Florida head coach Billy Napier acknowledged the situation in a statement, saying, “We are aware of the situation. We will continue to gather facts, cooperate with and monitor the legal and administrative processes.”
Johnson, a 21-year-old junior from Tampa, was booked early Saturday and released the following night after posting an $8,500 surety bond. Last season, he recorded 27 tackles and two pass breakups, contributing to the Gators’ defensive lineup.
