Devin Stephenson Chosen as Next President of Florida Polytechnic University
Devin Stephenson Chosen as Florida Polytechnic University’s Next President
In a closely contested 7-6 vote, the Florida Polytechnic University Board of Trustees has selected Devin Stephenson to be the institution’s next president. Stephenson, currently serving as the president of Northwest Florida State College, will succeed Randy Avent, who has been at the helm of the university since its inception in 2014.
The decision to appoint Stephenson sparked a debate among trustees, with some questioning whether the new president should have a background in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Despite concerns raised by some trustees about Stephenson’s lack of experience leading a university and his non-STEM background, supporters pointed to his proven track record in education leadership, fundraising abilities, and legislative connections as reasons for his selection.
Cliff Otto, chairman of the Florida Poly trustees, expressed confidence in Stephenson’s leadership abilities, citing his commitment to growth, successful fundraising efforts, and effectiveness in Tallahassee. Stephenson’s extensive experience in community college executive administration, as well as his academic credentials, including a doctorate in higher-education administration, were also highlighted as strengths.
However, not all trustees were in favor of Stephenson’s appointment, with Trustee Mark Bostick raising concerns about the lack of a STEM background. Despite the dissenting voices, other trustees defended the choice, emphasizing the importance of leadership qualities and the potential for Stephenson to drive investment in the university.
The selection of Stephenson as the next president of Florida Polytechnic University is subject to approval by the state university system’s Board of Trustees. In the meantime, negotiations for Stephenson’s contract will begin, with the final decision expected to be made during a meeting on April 25.
As Florida Poly prepares for a new chapter under Stephenson’s leadership, the university looks ahead to continued growth and innovation in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math.
