Carl Lindell’s Legacy: A Philanthropic Vision for Tampa’s Future
Tampa Philanthropist Carl Lindell Plans $130 Million Legacy for Community
TAMPA, Fla. — At 80 years old, Carl Lindell, a prominent figure in the Tampa business landscape, is charting a new course for his wealth, one that prioritizes community over inheritance. Known for his successful ventures in car dealerships and real estate development, Lindell is now focused on a philanthropic mission that aims to leave a lasting impact on the Tampa Bay area.
Reflecting on his journey, Lindell has learned valuable lessons from fellow affluent individuals about the pitfalls of wealth preservation within families. “It seems like most every refrain I heard for those who tried to keep it all in the family and make all their children really wealthy, I heard so much pushback from that,” he shared. This insight has driven him to create a plan that diverts his fortune from the IRS to charitable causes.
Over the past two years, Lindell has meticulously crafted a strategy to donate approximately $130 million to local charities through the Community Foundation Tampa Bay. His vision is not just about giving money; it’s about instilling a sense of philanthropy in his family. “We felt like the best gift was for them to be philanthropists. Teach their children about helping other people, and at the same time, helping the community that we grew up in,” he explained.
Lindell’s commitment to Tampa is deeply personal. His son, Russ, expressed pride in his father’s dedication to their hometown. “He has such a strong affection for the Tampa community. This is where he made his name. The fact that he worked really hard to make it happen that it’s sustainable and benefits the community in perpetuity is exciting,” he said.
The Lindell family is not just planning for the present; they are laying the groundwork for future generations. Mark Stroud, CEO of Lindell Investments, emphasized the potential for growth in their philanthropic efforts. “We will continue on after Carl is gone and work to double or even triple that amount,” he stated, envisioning a future where the family can contribute $5-10 million annually to local charities.
Marlene Spalten, President of Community Foundation Tampa Bay, praised the ambitious plan. “It is very generous. It is very complex. And they are willing to be very transparent about it. What that gives us is the opportunity to talk about and inspire other people to think about that as an option for giving,” she noted.
Among the causes close to Lindell’s heart are early learning programs, but he and his family remain open to supporting various initiatives based on community needs. As they prepare to embark on this philanthropic journey, the Lindells are not just leaving behind a financial legacy; they are fostering a culture of giving that will resonate throughout Tampa for generations to come.
