Florida Welcomes Evacuees from the Middle East Amid Ongoing Conflict

Charter Flights from the Middle East Bring Evacuees to Florida Amid Escalating Conflict

TAMPA, Fla. — As tensions rise in the Middle East, Florida is stepping up to play a crucial role in the evacuation of American citizens. On Thursday morning, one of the first charter flights carrying evacuees from Israel touched down at Tampa International Airport, marking a significant milestone in a coordinated emergency response effort.

Among the anxious family members waiting on the tarmac was Amy Harwood, whose son was part of a Birthright trip that included 1,500 participants. After a harrowing 13-hour journey by sea to Cyprus, they boarded flights arranged by the state. “He just sent me a text and said, ‘We’re going to charter a flight to Tampa,’” Harwood recounted, her relief palpable. “I was nervous because I didn’t know where he was and what was going on.”

Many of the returning evacuees are college students studying abroad, caught in a rapidly changing situation. Tampa-based nonprofit Grey Bull Rescue has been at the forefront of these operations, working closely with state officials to facilitate the safe return of American citizens. “They’re scared college kids, they’re young. They don’t know what to do,” said Bryan Stern, founder of Grey Bull Rescue. “We have people in Jordan, in Israel, in Cyprus, and we continue to conduct operations throughout the region.”

The mission, however, is fraught with challenges. Stern highlighted the complications posed by airspace and border closures due to escalating tensions with Iran. “The big contingencies we’re worried about are more airspace closures and border closures, which continue to frustrate operations,” he explained. “But it’s not a political thing, not a military thing — it’s an American thing. Saving American lives is saving American lives.”

As the situation evolves, Grey Bull Rescue has received nearly 5,000 requests for assistance, a number that is expected to rise as the weekend approaches. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is set to greet another incoming flight of evacuees at Tampa International Airport early Friday morning, underscoring the state’s commitment to aiding those in need.

For anyone requiring assistance in getting out of Israel, an evacuation assistance form is available through Grey Bull Rescue on FloridaDisaster.org.

As the world watches the unfolding crisis, Florida stands ready to welcome home its citizens, providing a lifeline amid uncertainty.
