NOKOMIS, Fla. – As the holiday season unfolds, a five-acre property in Nokomis, Sarasota County, has transformed into a dazzling winter wonderland, captivating visitors with over 37,000 twinkling lights. Open to the public every Friday through Sunday, this festive display is the brainchild of local resident Michael Lemek, who aims to recreate the cherished Christmas traditions of his childhood.

“I grew up with my mother who always had Christmas and made sure everything was special and all lit up. I’m trying to continue that tradition,” Lemek shared with FOX 13. His passion for the holiday spirit is evident as families flock to his property off Kilpatrick Road, eager to experience the charm of an old-fashioned Christmas.

Visitors are invited to drive through the enchanting light display, stop to interact with a variety of animals at Lemek’s non-profit petting zoo, and indulge in hot chocolate and candy canes. The zoo features an array of friendly creatures, including donkeys, ducks, pigs, goats, and even Scottish Highland cows. “Mango is so cute,” exclaimed one delighted visitor, highlighting the joy these animals bring to the experience.

Lemek’s initiative is more than just a light show; it’s a heartfelt effort to provide children with an opportunity to connect with animals and nature, a rarity in today’s digital age. “Not many kids can have a spot where they can come and play with the animals and interact with stuff, rather than on the computer,” he noted.

Families like Ryan and Olivia Wagner are already feeling the holiday cheer. “There are animals and there’s music,” Olivia said, while Ryan added, “I like the donkey and I heard there was hot chocolate, and I want to try some of that.”

Adding to the festive atmosphere, Santa Claus himself is expected to make a special appearance on December 19, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., ready to meet children and hear their Christmas wishes.

Lemek’s vision for the holiday display is ever-expanding. “It’s enjoyable for me to do. I like to share it with the community. To watch their eyes light up is what it’s all about,” he expressed, emphasizing his desire to create lasting memories for families.

The holiday lights are open to the public from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights at 1720 Kilpatrick Road. While admission is free, donations are welcomed to support Lemek’s non-profit petting zoo.
