According to Beach Safety officials, Alvarado went underwater and likely hit his head on either the sand or a sandbar before becoming wrapped around a piling on the pier. It took several minutes for fellow surfers, restaurant staff, and bystanders to free him from the pier.

Despite the valiant efforts to save him, Alvarado succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a devastated community of friends and family. Described as a vibrant and adventurous spirit, Alvarado was a beloved figure in the Volusia surf community.
