Governor DeSantis Signs Landmark Bills to Enhance Mental Health and Substance Abuse Resources in Tampa
TAMPA, Fla. — In a significant move to address mental health and substance abuse issues in Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis signed two pivotal bills on Wednesday aimed at expanding resources and support for those in need.
The first piece of legislation, Senate Bill 168, known as the "Tristan Murphy Act," focuses on establishing mental health diversion programs across counties and municipalities. This initiative is designed to prevent individuals with mental illnesses from being incarcerated, instead directing them toward appropriate mental health evaluations and support services. Governor DeSantis emphasized the importance of these programs, stating that they will require mental health assessments for individuals with a history of court rulings regarding mental incompetency before they are placed on probation.
In addition to SB 168, DeSantis also signed Senate Bill 1620, which standardizes clinical mental health assessments used by providers and school mental health programs. This law aims to improve discharge planning from treatment facilities, develop specialized mobile crisis response services for seniors, and evaluate the availability of telehealth services.
During the bill signing ceremony, DeSantis announced a name change for the Florida Mental Health Institute at the University of South Florida, now to be known as the Senator Darryl E. Rouson Center for Substance Abuse and Mental Health Research. This change reflects a commitment to advancing research and resources in the field.
In an exclusive interview with ABC Action News anchor Wendy Ryan, Clara Reynolds, President and CEO of the Crisis Center, expressed her support for the new legislation. "These bills represent a crucial step forward in addressing the mental health crisis in our communities," Reynolds stated.
