Rare Chance of Snow Flurries in Florida as Winter Storm Approaches
Rare Snow Flurries May Greet Tampa After 16-Year Hiatus
As the U.S. Southeast braces for a winter storm this weekend, a coastal Florida city is on the brink of experiencing a rare phenomenon: snow flurries. The National Weather Service (NWS) has indicated a 10 to 20 percent chance that Tampa could see its first snow in 16 years, with the last recorded flurries occurring on January 9, 2010.
Meteorologists are closely monitoring the storm, which follows the recent devastation of Winter Storm Fern. While the heaviest snowfall is expected along the Eastern Seaboard, particularly in the Carolinas, Tampa’s potential for snow has caught the attention of weather enthusiasts. WFLA-TV chief meteorologist Jeff Berardelli expressed his astonishment on social media, stating, “Holy cow! This has to be a first!!”
NWS meteorologist Tony Hurt explained that if snow does fall, it will likely be confined to coastal areas as moisture moves inland from the Gulf of Mexico. However, residents should prepare for “very breezy” conditions throughout the weekend.
Other parts of Florida are also in the mix, with Jacksonville having the highest likelihood of snowfall. The state is bracing for an extreme cold snap, with temperatures in Northern Florida potentially feeling like the single digits due to wind chill. Even Miami could see temperatures dip near freezing.
A cold weather advisory is expected to be issued for South Florida, with freeze warnings already in place across much of the state. The NWS has urged residents to take precautions, advising them to dress warmly, keep pets indoors, and protect sensitive plants from the cold.
“Very cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure,” warned the NWS office in Melbourne, emphasizing the potential dangers of frost and freeze conditions.
Looking ahead, the NWS Climate Prediction Center forecasts that below-average temperatures will persist across the eastern U.S. through February 7, with Florida among the states most likely to experience this chill.
As the weekend approaches, all eyes will be on Tampa, where the possibility of snow flurries could transform the Sunshine State into a winter wonderland—if only for a fleeting moment.
