Remembering Preston Logan Jones: A Father’s Heartfelt Tribute to His Joyful Son Lost to Suicide
Tampa Father Shares Heartbreaking Journey After Son’s Suicide
TAMPA, Fla. — In a poignant tribute to his son, Tony Jones reflects on the life of Preston Logan Jones, a vibrant young man whose struggles with mental health ultimately led to tragedy. "Preston was just a joyful young man. He loved people, sports, and socializing," Tony shared, his voice filled with emotion. "He always made his friends laugh."
Preston, a talented athlete at Berkeley Preparatory School, excelled in baseball, football, basketball, and even lacrosse, a sport his father admits he knew little about. "He was sensitive and compassionate, always feeling for the losing team," Tony recalled, emphasizing his son’s deep empathy.
As Preston navigated the challenges of adolescence, Tony believed his son was simply experiencing typical growing pains. However, everything changed on April 23, 2023, when Preston was involved in a severe car accident. Rushed to the ICU with life-threatening injuries, he shocked his family when he revealed, "Dad, I did it on purpose."
This revelation marked the beginning of a difficult journey toward understanding and healing. With therapy and support, Preston began to confront his mental health struggles. "He couldn’t handle disappointment," Tony explained. "He cared so much about us that when he felt he let someone down, it hurt him deeply."
After a year of recovery, Preston graduated and headed to Florida State University, reassuring his family that he was doing well. "He even apologized for his first attempt," Tony said, reflecting on the hope they felt. But on October 13, 2024, that hope was shattered when deputies arrived at their door with devastating news: Preston had died in another car accident.
Tony believes that mental illness, compounded by a family history of similar struggles, played a significant role in Preston’s tragic fate. "It runs in my family," he said, emphasizing the need for awareness and understanding of mental health issues.
Now, in the wake of his loss, Tony is dedicated to raising awareness about mental health among teenagers. He speaks at local schools, urging young people to seek help and to understand that it’s okay to not be okay. "Comparison is the thief of joy," he warns, highlighting the negative impact of social media on mental well-being.
Through his advocacy, Tony hopes to honor Preston’s memory and prevent other families from experiencing similar heartbreak. "If Preston were here, he’d probably be embarrassed by my speaking out," he said with a bittersweet smile. "But I believe he’s proud of me."
