Black heritage and pride are strong in the Tampa Bay area, and there are several ways to honor Black History Month in the community. From walking tours to art exhibitions and cultural events, there is something for everyone to participate in and celebrate the rich history and contributions of Black Americans.

One way to honor Black History Month is by taking part in the Central Ave. West Walking Tour led by curator Fred Hearns. This tour includes stops at significant historical sites such as the St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church Historic Building and the graves of enslaved Africans in Oaklawn Cemetery. Another option is to attend the Local Stories Live: Black in Business discussion featuring Black business owners sharing their experiences and insights.

For those interested in art and culture, the ReIMAGINE event showcases works by Black contemporary artists impacted by the criminal legal system. Additionally, the ZuZu African Acrobats performance offers a unique celebration of East African culture through acrobatics and music.

Food and history enthusiasts can attend events like Collards After Dark, a southern-prepared meal accompanied by dialogue on healthcare disparities within Black communities. Wine Pairing Celebration features the McBride Sisters Wine Company, the largest Black-owned wine company in the U.S., in a celebration of Black business owners.

Other events include the Black History Month Reception with former Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Derrick Brooks and the Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song film screening, a significant piece in the history of Black cinema.
