Historic Groundbreaking for Tampa Florida Temple Set for August
Tampa, FL — A significant milestone for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is on the horizon as the groundbreaking for the Tampa Florida Temple has been officially announced for August 23, 2025. This event marks the first time since 2022 that an Apostle will preside over the groundbreaking of a house of the Lord, with Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles leading the ceremony.
Elder Andersen, who previously served as the Tampa Florida Stake president, expressed his excitement for the project, emphasizing the temple’s role in strengthening the community’s faith and spiritual growth. The temple is expected to serve thousands of members in the region, providing a sacred space for worship and reflection.
New Spiritual Experiences at Heber Valley Camp
In addition to the temple announcement, the Church has unveiled a new initiative at the Heber Valley Camp in Utah. The “Look Unto Christ Walk” is a one-mile illuminated trail designed to foster personal spiritual experiences for visitors. Brother Bradley R. Wilcox, first counselor in the Young Men general presidency, described the walk as a “mountain-top experience,” encouraging participants to reflect on their relationship with the Savior.
Community Support Amid Texas Flooding
As communities in central Texas grapple with the aftermath of catastrophic flooding, local leaders from the Church are stepping up to provide comfort and support. A Texas stake president and Area Seventy highlighted the importance of patience and perspective in ministering to those affected. Despite the devastation, stories of miracles and tender mercies have emerged, showcasing the resilience of the community.
Celebrating Faith Through Sports
In a lighter vein, professional pickleball champion Callie Jo Smith joined the Church News podcast this week, sharing her journey of faith and family alongside her athletic achievements. Smith’s story resonates with many, as she uses her platform to inspire others both on and off the court.
Global Outreach and Humanitarian Efforts
The Church continues to expand its global outreach, with a new branch organized in the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, which has seen its membership grow six-fold in just two months. Additionally, FamilySearch is commemorating the 200th anniversary of Norwegian immigrants crossing the Atlantic by replicating the ship that carried them.
Recent interfaith efforts have also gained momentum, with women from various faiths uniting for the World Day of Prayer in the Cook Islands and leaders in the Democratic Republic of the Congo signing a memorandum to promote peace.
A Commitment to Humanitarian Work
The Church’s humanitarian efforts have made a significant impact, with nearly 20 million people in Europe benefiting from various initiatives in 2024. From emergency response to sustainable projects like beekeeping, the Church remains committed to caring for those in need.
