Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Tampa Florida Temple: A New Beacon of Faith and Community Hope

Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks New Era for Tampa Florida Temple

RIVERVIEW, Florida — August 24, 2025, 3:56 p.m. MDT — A momentous occasion unfolded on Saturday, August 23, as Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles led the groundbreaking ceremony for the highly anticipated Tampa Florida Temple. The event, attended by local church members, community leaders, and family, marked the beginning of a new spiritual landmark in the region.

Elder Andersen outlined three pivotal reasons for building temples: to enhance faith in Jesus Christ, to perform eternal ordinances, and to create a sanctuary from life’s challenges. “We live in a secular world, sliding down the slope of unrighteousness,” he remarked. “Yet, the Lord has called us to love Him above all else. This house will strengthen our faith and courage.”

The ceremony took place on a rainy day, yet spirits remained high as attendees gathered to celebrate the construction of a temple that holds deep personal significance for Elder Andersen and his wife, Sister Kathy Andersen. “Tampa is where my wife grew up and where we raised our family,” Elder Andersen shared, reflecting on the community’s importance to them.

Elder Brook P. Hales, a General Authority Seventy, emphasized the temple’s role in fostering sacred covenants with God. He quoted President Russell M. Nelson, stating, “Nothing will help you more to hold fast to the iron rod than worshipping in the temple.”

Local voices also echoed the excitement. Joseph Anthony Meyers II, Levi Martinez, and Samantha McLaws, representatives from various Florida stakes, shared their hopes for the temple’s impact on the community. Florida state Rep. Michele Rayner and Rev. Glenn Dames, senior pastor at the Allen Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church, were among the distinguished guests present.

In a heartfelt prayer, Elder Andersen dedicated the site, expressing gratitude for the faithful members whose efforts made this day possible. “Without their righteousness, this house of the Lord would not be built,” he said.

Sister Andersen reminisced about her family’s journey to the temple, recounting how her great-grandparents traveled to Utah for sacred ordinances. “Today is a day of joy and happiness,” she said, as the community prepares for a temple that will serve as a beacon of faith.

Elder Andersen described the Tampa temple as a “miracle,” making temple blessings more accessible to those who previously traveled long distances. “This is what President Nelson is bringing to the whole Church,” he noted.

Local Latter-day Saints expressed profound gratitude and excitement. Amber Pirotta, a member of the Apollo Beach Ward, shared her emotional connection to the temple, highlighting how its proximity will be life-changing for her family. “Knowing that we’re worthy to have a temple close to home is a blessing,” she said.

As the groundbreaking ceremony concluded, the community looked forward to the temple’s completion, envisioning a future enriched by its presence. “Whenever there’s a temple, the whole area becomes just beautiful,” Bonnie Kelly, a member of the Citrus Park Ward, remarked, encapsulating the collective hope and anticipation surrounding this sacred project.

The Tampa Florida Temple is set to become a cornerstone of faith and community, fostering spiritual growth and connection for generations to come.
