Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Highlights State’s Leadership in Immigration Enforcement at Press Conference

Florida Sets National Standard in Immigration Enforcement, Says Gov. DeSantis

TAMPA, Fla. – In a bold declaration at a press conference on Monday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis asserted that the Sunshine State is leading the charge in illegal immigration enforcement, claiming it sets the benchmark for the entire nation.

“We’re making huge progress on the issue of enforcing laws against illegal immigration,” DeSantis stated, emphasizing that no other state is doing as much as Florida. His remarks come as the state ramps up its efforts to tackle illegal immigration head-on.

One of the key announcements from the press conference was the new authority granted to the Florida Highway Patrol, allowing them to conduct operations and arrest illegal immigrants independently, without federal oversight. This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance local enforcement capabilities.

DeSantis also revealed a proposal under consideration that, if approved at the federal level, would see military judge advocates serving as immigration judges. This initiative aims to establish temporary detention facilities and streamline transportation for apprehended individuals.

Highlighting his administration’s commitment to law and order, DeSantis noted that Florida had previously allowed sanctuary cities—a policy he vehemently opposed. Upon taking office, he worked with the legislature to ban these cities, viewing it as a crucial step in maintaining public safety.

Florida is also leading the nation in E-Verify implementation, a system designed to enhance employment eligibility verification. DeSantis pointed out that all 67 Florida sheriffs have signed 287(g) agreements with ICE, enabling local law enforcement to assist in immigration enforcement.

Recent operations, including the notable Operation Tidal Wave, have reportedly led to the apprehension of over 1,100 illegal immigrants, including members of notorious gangs like MS-13. “We need to give Highway Patrol a raise,” DeSantis remarked, acknowledging the critical role troopers have played in these efforts. “They’ve been at the border for years…helping the feds in this.”

However, the governor expressed frustration over the Florida House’s rejection of pay increases for the Highway Patrol, calling it “beyond me” and stressing the importance of competitive compensation to retain skilled officers.

Dave Kerner, Executive Director of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, praised the collaboration between state and federal agencies. “When these men and women put on their uniform, they know that they’re going to work in dangerous conditions with the governor backing them,” Kerner stated.

Larry Keefe, Executive Director of the Florida State Board of Immigration Enforcement, echoed the governor’s sentiments, asserting that Florida’s strategies are becoming a model for other states, with the federal government recognizing the state’s effective approach to immigration enforcement.

As Florida continues to navigate the complexities of immigration policy, DeSantis remains steadfast in his commitment to ensuring that the state leads the way in enforcement and public safety.
