DeSantis Condemns Violence Against Law Enforcement Following Altercation in Jacksonville
WASHINGTON (TNND) — Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued a stern warning to residents against violent confrontations with law enforcement, following a troubling incident in Jacksonville that left a state trooper injured. The governor’s remarks came during a press conference on Thursday, where he highlighted the case of Jennifer Cruz, who was arrested for allegedly assaulting a state trooper during an operation involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“This is not Minneapolis,” DeSantis stated emphatically, referencing the ongoing tensions surrounding law enforcement in other states. “This is not going to end well for you in Florida.”
The altercation unfolded outside Mi Pueblo, a local Mexican grocery store, where Cruz reportedly exited her vehicle and punched a state trooper in the face. Footage from the scene captured Cruz screaming expletives at officers as she was placed in the back of a police car. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier shared a still image from the dashboard camera, showing Cruz smiling during her arrest.
“Jennifer disagrees with immigration enforcement and decided to commit a few felonies,” Uthmeier remarked, taking a jab at Minnesota officials who have criticized ICE operations in their state. “But unlike Minnesota, we don’t put up with this nonsense. Not today, Jennifer.”
Witnesses, including Juan Alvarez, the grocery store owner, described the chaotic scene. Alvarez noted that law enforcement was initially detaining another individual when Cruz’s confrontation escalated, leading to a significant police presence.
Cruz now faces multiple charges, including battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest with violence. Although she has been released on bond, she is scheduled to appear in court on February 4.
During the press conference, DeSantis emphasized the importance of lawful protest. “You have a right to criticize government policy,” he stated. “But the idea that you’re going to assault one of our troopers is unacceptable, and you are going to face consequences as a result of that.”
As tensions surrounding immigration enforcement continue to rise, DeSantis’s comments serve as a reminder of Florida’s stance on law and order, particularly in the face of escalating confrontations between citizens and law enforcement officials.
