Tragic Memorial Day Incident in Lakeland: Neighbor Shot After Gator Attack and Assault on Deputies

Gunfire Erupts in Lakeland Community After Bizarre Incident Involving Alligator Attack

LAKELAND, Fla. — Memorial Day took a tragic turn for residents of the Christina Hammock community when they awoke to the sound of gunfire in their front yards. The unsettling events unfolded early Monday morning, leaving neighbors in shock and mourning.

“It is very sad to think that someone died right in front of your house,” said one anonymous neighbor. “So, it’s been a very trying day.”

In a news briefing, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd revealed that deputies shot and killed 42-year-old Timothy Schultz after a series of bizarre and violent incidents. According to reports, Schultz was attacked by an alligator, assaulted a deputy with garden shears, broke into a patrol car, and attempted to steal a firearm.

Steve, a retired law enforcement officer and neighbor, recounted the harrowing moments: “I basically heard the gunshots. I got up, opened my garage door, and saw the two deputies treating him.” He described the day as “pretty bizarre,” noting that he has been a crime watch director in the area for five years and had never witnessed anything like it.

The chaotic series of events began when deputies received a call about a “shaking” man at a nearby Racetrack on Highway 37. However, they were unable to locate him. Nearly two hours later, another call reported a man swimming in a lake known to be inhabited by alligators.

“He was gator bitten along the way,” Sheriff Judd stated. “Now this is just crazy stuff.” Steve added, “Nobody swims in here. We’ve got 10 and 12-foot gators in this lake, so it’s not advisable.”

Witnesses attempted to assist Schultz, but he reportedly refused help and even growled at one neighbor. A local resident, who wished to remain anonymous for her family’s safety, described the fear that gripped her household. “We ran into the bathroom literally and we were very scared because we didn’t know if shots were going to come through the windows,” she said.

Sheriff Judd detailed the confrontation, explaining that Schultz attempted to attack a deputy with garden shears and used a brick to try to break into a truck. “We try to de-escalate,” he said. “We tased him twice; we told him to drop the shears to no effect. The tasers had no effect on him.”

Judd noted that Schultz had a lengthy criminal history involving methamphetamine. “His conduct was outrageous,” he remarked. “When you can swim across the lake, sustain apparent alligator bites, grab shears, try to break into a vehicle, and attack law enforcement officers, you’re out of your mind on drugs.”

Fortunately, all deputies involved are safe. As per protocol, the two deputies who discharged their weapons will remain on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of this shocking incident, residents are left to reflect on the fragility of safety in their once-peaceful neighborhood.
