As they were about 13 or 14 miles offshore, the gravity of the situation hit them. “I picked up my phone. It’s like, ‘Your dad’s been shot.’ We didn’t know anything,” he recounted, the urgency of the moment palpable. “I think we set the sea speed record from offshore into Jupiter, where we live.”
