Greg Kehoe Selected as Next U.S. Attorney for Middle District of Florida
Greg Kehoe, a well-known Tampa defense lawyer and former federal prosecutor, has been tapped to be the next U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida, according to court documents filed on Friday. The White House has yet to confirm this appointment, but the documents filed in an Orlando federal criminal case indicate that Kehoe has been selected for the position.
Kehoe, who currently works at the law firm Greenberg Traurig, requested to withdraw from representing a defendant in the case due to a conflict of interest. In a document authored by Kehoe, he stated that he was informed the night before that he had been chosen to be the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida.
If formally nominated, Kehoe will need to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate. In the meantime, he could serve as the acting U.S. attorney while awaiting permanent nomination.
With a long and distinguished legal career, Kehoe has previously served as a first assistant U.S. Attorney in Tampa, handling cases involving outlaw motorcycle gangs, international drug rings, and public corruption. He also has experience working on international tribunals prosecuting war crimes in the former Yugoslavia and investigating war crimes in Iraq.
Kehoe’s appointment would follow the departure of Roger Handberg, the previous U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida. The office prosecutes federal crimes in a 35-county region spanning from Jacksonville to Naples.
As the legal community awaits official confirmation of Kehoe’s appointment, many believe he is well-suited for the role due to his extensive experience and knowledge of the office. If appointed, Kehoe would be stepping into a crucial position overseeing federal prosecutions in a significant region of Florida.
