Tampa Rallies to Support Texas Flood Victims: Local Organizations Mobilize for Relief Efforts

Tampa Rallies to Support Texas Flood Victims Amid Tragedy

TAMPA, Fla. — As Texas grapples with the aftermath of devastating flash floods that have claimed over 100 lives, including more than 20 girls and staff members from Camp Mystic in Kerr County, the spirit of solidarity shines brightly in Tampa. Local organizations, including the Salvation Army and Project Dynamo, are mobilizing to provide much-needed assistance to those affected.

“This hits home for us as parents and grandparents,” said Major Mark Woodcock, area commander of the Salvation Army of Hillsborough County. “We’re so thankful to give that camping experience to our children, and that’s exactly what those families want to do for their children, and unfortunately, it has ended in tragedy.”

The Salvation Army is actively working to provide spiritual and emotional support, as well as food for first responders and flood victims. Woodcock and his team of volunteers in Tampa are on standby, ready to deploy to Texas as the situation unfolds. Meanwhile, the Salvation Army in Kerrville has already dispatched over 80 volunteers to deliver food and water to emergency workers on the ground.

“We’ve already sent two tractor-trailer loads of supplies into Kerrville,” said Alvin Migues, disaster services director of the Salvation Army in Texas. “We are also managing donations for Kerr County.”

In addition to the Salvation Army, Tampa-based nonprofit Project Dynamo is stepping up to assist. This veteran-led organization specializes in high-risk search and rescue operations and has unique resources to navigate challenging terrains. Operations Director Mike Dinesman highlighted their use of horseback teams, which can access areas that other vehicles cannot.

“We have two horseback teams, so we’ve offered that because horses can get places where a lot of people can’t get to,” Dinesman explained.

For those wishing to contribute, both organizations emphasize the importance of monetary donations. “We’re seeing a huge influx of donated goods right now,” Migues noted. “In fact, it’s becoming challenging to keep up with all of it. Cash donations are the easiest way to help from Florida to Texas.”

However, Woodcock cautioned against potential scams, urging donors to stick to official websites when making contributions. “Have a little bit of common sense and go to those official websites,” he advised.

The urgent need for support in central Texas is palpable, and local efforts are being amplified by a partnership between Scripps News and the Scripps Howard Fund. This initiative aims to provide critical relief to those impacted by the floods, with every dollar donated going directly to recovery efforts. Contributions are tax-deductible, making it easier for Floridians to lend a helping hand.

As communities in Texas begin the long road to recovery, the outpouring of support from Tampa serves as a reminder of the resilience and compassion that can emerge in the face of tragedy.
