Community Mourns Tampa Man Killed in West Bank, Calls for Justice

TAMPA, Fla. — A somber gathering unfolded Sunday evening as friends, family, and community members came together to honor the life of Sayfollah Musallet, a 20-year-old Tampa resident tragically killed while visiting family overseas. Musallet, known for his warm smile and dedication, ran the popular ice cream shop “Ice Screamin” on Bruce B. Downs.

On Monday, his family held a press conference to remember him, describing him as a “kind, hard-working, and deeply respected young man.” His uncle, Ferase Ibrahim, shared heartfelt memories, stating, “Everybody knew him. Nice kid, smiling all the time, working hard.”

Musallet’s life was cut short on Friday when family members reported he was “brutally beaten to death” by Israeli settlers in the West Bank. Hiba Rahim, Deputy Executive Director of CAIR-Florida, expressed the profound grief felt by the community, stating, “It’s not just having a family member die; it’s having a family member, a son, a nephew, a cousin beaten to death by illegal Israeli settlers.”

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) Florida, the state’s largest Muslim civil liberties organization, is advocating for accountability in the wake of Musallet’s death. His family claims he was protecting his land alongside two relatives when they were surrounded by settlers for over three hours, preventing paramedics from reaching him. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.

The Islamic Community of Tampa Mosque in Temple Terrace hosted a special prayer service, drawing attendees from across the state. Ibrahim, who traveled three hours to attend, expressed disbelief at the news, saying, “We’re all shocked. He went there for vacation, to see his mom, his family, his grandmother, and when we heard the news, we just felt it as a community.”

Musallet’s family released a statement describing their loss as an “unimaginable nightmare.” They are now calling for public officials to condemn the violence and for the U.S. government to hold those responsible accountable. Rahim emphasized, “Just because it’s Israel does not give them immunity to kill our citizens.”

In a show of solidarity, Jonathan Ellis, Chair of the Jewish Community Relations Council, extended condolences to Musallet’s family. “Whenever somebody’s child dies, your heart just goes out to them regardless of the facts or circumstances surrounding it,” he said, expressing trust in the Israeli government to conduct a thorough investigation.

U.S. Representative Kathy Castor also issued a statement, echoing the community’s call for justice and accountability.

As the community grapples with this tragic loss, the call for justice resonates deeply, underscoring the need for compassion and accountability in the face of violence.
