Upcoming Black History Month Events in the Greater Tampa Bay Region

Black History Month is a time to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Black Americans throughout history. Established in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson, the month of February was chosen to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor. This year, the greater Tampa Bay region is hosting a variety of events to commemorate Black history, culture, and heritage.

In Hillsborough County, events include “An Evening in Celebration of Frederick Douglass” at the Tampa Theatre on February 7th, the UNCF Black History Month Walk for Education and HBCU Homecoming Festival on February 10th, and the USF Centre Gallery Exhibition: Black Heritage Month from February 12th to February 22nd. The Tampa Bay History Center will also host a Black History Month Reception on February 23rd and “The Stories We Tell: Sharing Our Black History through Creative Expression” on February 17th.

In Pinellas County, events include “Coffee With a Curator: Impressionism and Black History” at the Salvador Dalí Museum on February 7th, the February ArtWalk at Creative Clay on February 10th, the Tampa Bay Publix Collard Green Festival on February 17th, the Pinellas African American Heritage Celebration on February 24th, and the St. Petersburg Black History Bike Tour on February 3rd, 11th, and 24th.

In Polk County, the Jackson Park Black History Festival will take place on February 17th in Lakeland, while in Pasco County, the African American Club Black History Month Festival will be held on February 24th in Port Richey.

For those unable to attend in person, virtual events are also available. The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) will host a variety of online panels throughout the month. Visit ASALH’s Virtual Festival webpage to find a calendar of their virtual Black History Month events.

With a wide range of events and activities, the greater Tampa Bay region is coming together to honor and celebrate Black history this February.
