Celebrate Caribbean Heritage Month in Tampa Bay: A Vibrant Festival of Music, Art, and Cuisine!

Tampa Bay Celebrates National Caribbean Heritage Month with Free Festival

TAMPA, Fla. — June is a vibrant month for Tampa Bay as it marks National Caribbean Heritage Month, and this year, the celebration is set to be more exciting than ever. The Caribbean American National Development Organization (CANDO) is hosting the 13th annual Tampa Bay Caribbean Heritage Festival, bringing the rich culture of the Caribbean islands to the heart of Florida.

For the first time, admission to the festival is free, making it accessible to everyone in the community. “West Central Florida is actually home to one of the largest populations of Caribbean people in the United States,” said Roxeanne Bartley, a representative of CANDO. “This festival is a chance for everyone to experience the warmth and vibrancy of Caribbean culture without having to jump on a plane.”

The festival will take place on June 7 at the University Area Community Development Center from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Attendees can expect a feast for the senses, featuring authentic Caribbean food, lively music, and stunning art. Performers like Krazy K from Saint Lucia and Keemba on Da Drums from St. Kitts and Nevis are excited to share their customs and traditions. “It’s amazing to finally be able to perform here; it’s a blessing,” said Krazy K, who has dreamed of this moment since childhood.

Keemba on Da Drums echoed that sentiment, stating, “It means a lot because I feel like I’m able to share my experiences. It becomes a celebration like a reunion.”

This year’s festival also introduces an art show spotlighting young, emerging talent from underserved Caribbean American communities. “This opportunity isn’t available to many, and this event serves as a platform for these artists to be seen,” said artist Gavin Quijano. Proceeds from the art sales will support CANDO’s various programs, which focus on health, education, workforce development, and disaster recovery.

Bartley emphasized the importance of CANDO’s role in the community: “We are not just a voice for the Caribbean community; we are a voice for Tampa Bay. We help set Tampa Bay apart on both national and international stages.”

Festival-goers can look forward to a culinary journey through the islands, with dishes from Trinidad, Jamaica, Haiti, and more. “One thing I can’t wait for is the food. I love sampling each and every dish,” said Krazy K, highlighting the festival’s diverse offerings.

Join the celebration of Caribbean culture and community in Tampa Bay this weekend, where the spirit of the islands comes alive right in your backyard.
