Busch Gardens Tampa Bay Welcomes New Baby Orangutan

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay has announced the birth of a female orangutan, adding to the animal theme park’s family. The baby orangutan, weighing 3.4 pounds, was born via C-section to parents Luna and Madju on April 13. The park shared a video of the birth on social media, showcasing the special moment.

The Bornean orangutan is a critically endangered species, making this birth a significant event for conservation efforts. The park, part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan, focuses on providing care to endangered species and educating visitors about conservation.

Luna’s pregnancy was closely monitored by zookeepers and veterinarians, with the decision to perform a C-section made after an ultrasound on April 13. The baby orangutan was not in the right position for a natural birth, leading to the medical intervention.

Now, Luna and her newborn are in stable condition, with the baby’s development being closely watched. In the coming weeks, the baby orangutan will begin to grow and develop, eventually being able to climb trees and eat solid foods with Luna’s help.

This new addition to Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is a step forward in conservation efforts for the critically endangered Bornean orangutan. Stay tuned for more updates on this adorable baby orangutan’s journey at the park.
