Brightline Proposes $400 Million Bond Plan for Tampa Train Extension

TAMPA, Fla. – Brightline, the high-speed rail service, has unveiled an ambitious plan to issue bonds totaling up to $400 million to fund the extension of its train service to Tampa. This announcement comes via a notice from the Florida Development Finance Corporation (FDFC), signaling a significant step forward in the project that aims to connect Miami to Tampa over a span of approximately 320 miles.

The proceeds from the proposed bonds will be allocated towards the design, development, acquisition, construction, renovation, and equipping of the privately owned intercity passenger rail system. Hillsborough County Commissioner Harry Cohen expressed optimism about the project, stating, “Brightline’s commitment to sell these bonds is the most absolute commitment that we have seen that they are pursuing the financing to get this project done.” He added that, based on discussions with industry professionals, high-speed train passengers could be arriving in Tampa within the next decade.

Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to participate in a telephone conference call scheduled for Thursday, July 17, at 2 p.m. to discuss the plan. Interested parties can join the call using the following details:

  • Toll-free dial-in number: (833) 928-4609

  • Passcode: 358411

In a recent survey conducted by the Hillsborough Transportation Planning Organization (TPO), nearly 12,000 residents shared their thoughts on the potential Brightline station in Tampa. The results revealed that a majority of respondents envision using the train primarily for leisure activities, including visits to attractions and major events like sports games and concerts. Notably, 35% indicated they would utilize the service to travel from Tampa to Disney.

Johnny Wong, executive director of the Hillsborough TPO, noted that while leisure travel is expected to dominate, about 30% of respondents indicated they would also use the train for business purposes. Interestingly, 74% of those surveyed plan to drive to the Tampa Brightline station before boarding, with many intending to use ride-hailing services to reach their final destinations, including areas in Pinellas County.

While the exact location of the Tampa Brightline station remains undecided, the study identified downtown, Ybor City, and Channelside as the top preferences. Commissioner Cohen emphasized the importance of the station’s location, stating, “That’s the most right place for it to land,” highlighting the need for the train to navigate through the I-4 corridor to reach its destination.

As the project progresses, the community remains engaged, eager to see how this high-speed rail service will transform transportation in the Tampa Bay area.
