Windy Weekend Ahead for Tampa Bay Area: What to Expect
Windy Weekend Ahead for Tampa Bay Area as Disturbance Moves In
TAMPA, Fla. – Residents of the Bay Area should brace themselves for a blustery weekend as a weather disturbance makes its way northwest across Florida. According to FOX 13 Meteorologist Dave Osterberg, Friday will kick off with wind gusts ranging from 20 to 25 mph, with occasional bursts reaching up to 30 mph.
Osterberg notes that the strongest winds are likely to coincide with brief showers, which could sweep through the region. “When those quick, little showers come through, that’s when we’ll see the higher wind gusts,” he explained.
What’s Causing the Wind?
The windy conditions are attributed to a large ridge of high pressure located east of Virginia, which is funneling in a northeasterly wind. Simultaneously, an area of interest in the northern Bahamas has a 10% chance of tropical development. As this system shifts west-northwest over Florida, the combination of these two weather patterns is expected to create a notably windy atmosphere.
Osterberg predicts that the gusty winds will persist through Sunday morning, drawing moisture from the Gulf Stream and pushing showers across the state. While the east coast, particularly from Jacksonville to Miami, is expected to see significant rainfall, the west coast, including the Bay Area, will experience only a few passing showers throughout the weekend.
Not a Washout
Despite the windy conditions and potential for rain, Osterberg reassures residents that the weekend will not be a complete washout. “There will be some rain, but it won’t ruin your plans,” he said, encouraging locals to enjoy the weekend while keeping an eye on the weather.
Tracking Tropical Disturbances
In addition to the local weather, meteorologists are monitoring two tropical disturbances in the Atlantic. One area of low pressure over the Bahamas has a low chance (10%) of developing into a tropical system within the next week, hindered by moderate wind shear in the region. This disturbance is linked to the remnants of Hurricane Imelda and is expected to funnel deep tropical moisture into Florida’s east coast.
Meanwhile, a tropical wave emerging off the coast of Africa has a medium chance (50%) of development in the coming week. Long-range weather models suggest this system could develop in the western tropical Atlantic, prompting those in the Lesser Antilles to keep a watchful eye.
Although this wave is over 4,000 miles from the U.S. coastline and poses no immediate threat, meteorologists will continue to monitor its progress. If a new tropical storm forms, it would be named “Jerry,” according to the 2025 storm naming list.
As the Bay Area prepares for a windy weekend, residents are encouraged to stay informed and enjoy the dynamic weather while it lasts.
