Tampa Rapper Doechii Wins Grammy for Best Rap Album, Shouts Out Hometown
The Grammy’s on Sunday night were a night to remember for Tampa rapper Doechii, who took home the award for “Best Rap Album.” In her acceptance speech, she couldn’t help but rave about her hometown, Tampa, and the talent that resides there.
Doechii, who graduated from Blake High School, a Visual and Performing Arts Magnet School, is now one of only three women to win the Grammy for “Best Rap Album” since the category was introduced in 1989. She used her platform to encourage black women and girls to pursue their dreams, a message that resonated with students at Blake High School.
Her former teacher, Carmen Griffin, fondly remembers Doechii as Jaylah Hickmon, a shy student who blossomed into a confident performer. Doechii still visits the school whenever she is in town, inspiring students like Sherri Richburg, who considers her a role model.
Richburg watched the Grammy’s and felt a special connection to Doechii, especially when she spoke about empowering black women. Griffin believes that Doechii’s success is a testament to the talent at Blake High School, and she is confident that more students will follow in her footsteps.
Doechii’s win at the Grammy’s has put Tampa on the map, and her message of empowerment continues to inspire the next generation of artists. As the “Swamp Princess” celebrates her success, she remains a shining example of what is possible when you believe in yourself.
