Buffalo Bills’ Shane Buechele Shines in Preseason Finale Against Buccaneers

In a surprising turn of events, quarterback Shane Buechele not only took the field as the starter for the Buffalo Bills in their preseason finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he also played the entire game, leading the team to a 23-19 victory.

Buechele, who was listed as a fourth-string quarterback on the Bills’ unofficial depth chart, was the only signal-caller to take snaps during Saturday night’s exhibition. Coaches opted to keep Mitch Trubisky and Mike White on the sidelines, a decision that raised eyebrows given the competitive nature of the quarterback battle.

Trubisky, the incumbent backup, had started the preseason opener against the New York Giants, while White took the reins in the second game against the Chicago Bears. Both quarterbacks had shared the spotlight in those earlier contests, making Buechele’s solo performance all the more intriguing.

The absence of Trubisky and White from the field in the final preseason game suggests that the coaching staff may have already made a decision regarding the backup quarterback role. Trubisky had shown promise, averaging 7.4 yards per attempt and completing 61.5% of his passes, while White struggled, completing only 50% of his attempts and facing significant pressure.

Despite the odds stacked against him, Buechele delivered a commendable performance, showcasing his skills and determination. He completed 36 of 46 passes for 380 yards and threw one touchdown throughout the summer, proving he could be a valuable asset to the team.

While Buechele’s impressive showing may have solidified his place on the practice squad, he remains a long shot for a regular-season snap, having yet to see action since joining the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2021. Last season, he spent time on the Bills’ practice squad before landing on season-ending Injured Reserve.

As the Bills prepare for the regular season, Buechele’s performance against the Buccaneers will undoubtedly be a topic of discussion among fans and analysts alike. With the quarterback position seemingly settled, all eyes will now turn to how the Bills will utilize their roster as they aim for a successful campaign ahead.
