Baker Mayfield Navigates New Terrain with Third Offensive Coordinator in Three Seasons

Tampa, FL — In a whirlwind of coaching changes, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield finds himself adapting to his third offensive coordinator in as many seasons. Since joining the franchise in 2023, Mayfield has seen a revolving door of leadership, each bringing their own style and strategies to the field.

Last season, Mayfield worked under Dave Canales, who has since taken the helm as head coach of the Carolina Panthers. Following Canales, Liam Coen stepped in as offensive coordinator but quickly transitioned to the head coach position for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Now, Mayfield is teaming up with Josh Grizzard, who has been promoted from pass game coordinator to fill Coen’s shoes.

Mayfield recently shared insights on the differences between Grizzard and his predecessors. "Liam and I were close in L.A. and he was great for me last year," he noted. "Griz has his own tweaks on it. He’s handled it well. Things aren’t just going to transfer from one season to the next. Nothing we did last year matters."

Despite the challenges of adjusting to a new system, Mayfield remains optimistic. He emphasized the importance of building a solid foundation while focusing on explosive plays and improving the run game. "Josh is still getting used to calling plays," he explained. "He was instrumental in our third-down install and passing-game stuff last year, so he has experience."

Mayfield’s confidence is bolstered by the continuity within the team. "I try not to take it for granted being in the same system since I am so used to learning new offenses," he said. "Now it’s just about the details. We have a great group. We have everybody back and added some pieces in the skill group. That makes it easier."

As the Buccaneers gear up for next week’s mandatory minicamp, Mayfield is taking on even more responsibility, particularly when it comes to making checks at the line of scrimmage. "When people don’t have to think about it, it’s a lot better," he remarked, highlighting the importance of familiarity among teammates.

With the offseason in full swing, all eyes will be on Mayfield and the Buccaneers as they look to solidify their offensive strategy under Grizzard’s guidance. As the team prepares for the upcoming season, fans are eager to see how this latest chapter unfolds for the talented quarterback.
